Riga's Jugendstil Grandeur

No.1 Alberta iela Number 1
Nr.1 is the first to greet us, at the corner of Alberta iela and Antonija iela. At first glance up, it seems more large than grand, much less ornate than some of its neighbors, more content in a quiet sort of elegance. That's until you realize that Nr.1 was not built to face out on Alberta iela, but to face out on Antonija iela, to compete with its neighbors there.      No. 1 facade
Looking down Antonija iela, a completely different picture presents itself. Here we behold the grand facade, each floor opening on to its own open-air portico. An oval balcony, with its ornate ironwork, gracefully punctuates the facade's focal point, providing context to scale.
