Latvian Culture in Exile

Folk CostumesAnna Dārziņa Renditions—Postcards

Nica, the most intricate of them allIn looking through various boxes, Peters came across a collection of postcards of folk costume renderings by Anna Darzina, published by Janis Liepins in Esslingen, Germany. From some of the other clippings in the same envelope, it was obvious that Peters' father had acquired these during his stay in the D.P. camps.

We've reproduced the entire collection—18 postcards in all.

Latvian culture was vibrant and alive in the D.P. camps. These postcards are yet another example that, though their homeland might be lost to them forever, its memory was held sacred—and passing that memory to, and preserving it in, the next generation was paramount.

Since we put this collection up on the web, we received a note from one of Anna Darzina's relatives, who hadn't known about the postcards. We hope to add some more information about Anna Darzina in the future! These renderings also appear in the book Latvian Weaving Techniques, by Anita Apinis-Herman[ovskis]... the book is out of print, however, a few copies are still available... eMail us for information!
