Foreign policy and diplomacy
Foreign Minister Baiba Braže presented the annual foreign policy report to the Cabinet. The report states that Russia is a long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security and that Latvia will continue to apply maximum pressure to achieve “peace through strength.” It affirms that sanctions against Russia are effective and harming its economy. The report also highlights the importance of the Latvian diaspora, which attracts EUR 0.94–1.0 billion to Latvia each year. Notably, more than one fifth of Latvian citizens live abroad, while around 10 000 return each year.
Defense and security
This was a busy week for defense. Latvia and Sweden signed a defense cooperation roadmap to expand collaboration across air, sea, and land domains. Key areas include the “Archer” wheeled artillery system, unmanned aerial vehicles, and potential temporary deployments of Swedish Gripen jets to Latvia. Sweden also announced a new 500 million euros investment in drone systems. In a demonstration of domestic innovation, the company SAF Tehnika showed Defense Minister Andris Sprūds a prototype of a radio signal jamming device designed to disrupt drones. This was developed under a research and development agreement with the Ministry of Defense.
On the border, the Ministry of Defense published evidence it says proves Belarus is aiding illegal migration into the EU. This includes finding documents belonging to personnel from the 19th Guards Mechanized Infantry Brigade on a detained migrant and images of migrants with Belarusian border guards. The ministry described these actions as part of a hybrid threat. Domestically, recruitment for the State Defense Service saw 1,560 volunteers apply for the summer conscription, exceeding the required 1,470 spots.
Crime and justice
The Regional Court sentenced former Saeima deputy Jānis Ādamsons to eight years and two months in prison for espionage. The court found he systematically collected information and passed it to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) through his handler, Gennady Silonov. Ādamsons, who once served as Interior Minister, was convicted in 2023, and this appeal resulted in a slight sentence reduction. The prosecutor stated he received financial compensation for the information, which included details about NATO units and Latvian security services.
Society and economy
A report on traditional crafts revealed a decline in the number of shoemakers. Five years ago, there were 171 masters, but by 2024, the number had fallen to 159. The head of the Shoemakers' Association linked the trend to demographics, stating that a declining population reduces demand, but affirmed that the skilled repair work they provide will always be needed.
Environment and energy
Latvia is a leader in renewable energy within the EU. Data shows that in 2024, 55.5% of Latvia's electricity came from renewable sources, placing it seventh among member states. For overall energy consumption, renewables accounted for 45% in Latvia, the fourth-highest share in the EU. In a separate announcement, the Latvian Dendrologists' Association named the bird cherry (Prunus padus) as the Tree of the Year for 2026, noting its place in folklore and that all parts of the tree are moderately poisonous.
Transport and infrastructure
The government approved a plan to donate Rīga's old diesel buses to Ukraine as they are replaced with new electric models. Transport Minister Atis Švinka said this combines sustainable transport policy with real support for Ukraine. The bus replacement is part of the Riga Public Transport Greening Project, funded by the EU's Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, which has already purchased 17 new electric buses.

In sports, young biathlete Volfa won a silver medal in a sprint event.

Latvijas Saeimā savu mandātu oficiāli sāka jaunā parlamentāriete Inga Gatere. Viņa ieņems amatu, kas kļuva vakants pēc Jura Viņķa nāves, un darbosies Zemnieku savienības frakcijā.
Rīgā tikās Baltijas valstu un Francijas ārlietu ministri. Sanāksmē Latviju pārstāvēja ārlietu ministrs Jānis Bērziņš, Lietuvu – Gabrielius Landsbergis, Igauniju – Margus Tsahkna, bet Franciju – Stéphane Séjourné. Ministri apsprieda atbalstu Ukrainai, Eiropas drošību, kā arī ES paplašināšanos. Bērziņš uzsvēra, ka vienotība starp Eiropas un Ziemeļatlantijas sabiedrotajiem ir “absolūti nepieciešama”.
Aizsardzība
Latvijas bruņotajos spēkos apmēram ceturtā daļa no šogad iesauktajiem jauniešiem ir iestājušies dienestā kā brīvprātīgie iesaucamie. Pārējie ir personas, kuras iesauc, pamatojoties uz likumu par obligāto militāro dienestu.
Turpinās sarunas ar Zviedriju par ievērojamo “Archer” pašgājējhaubiču sistēmu iegādi Latvijai. Aizsardzības ministrija apstiprina, ka darbojas saskaņā ar iepriekš noslēgto iepirkuma līgumu un gaida Zviedrijas valdības atbildi par iespējamo piegādi.
Sabiedrība un drošība
Patērētāju tiesību aizsardzības centrs (PTAC) ir bloķējis piekļuvi vairākām tīmekļvietnēm, kas aiz segvārda “Siltums Tavai mājai” piedāvāja malkas granulas, taču pēc apmaksas preci nenodrošināja. Cietušie tiek mudināti vērsties policijā.
Bēgļu ugunsgrēkā privātmājā Ķekavas novadā gāja bojā divi nepilngadīgie. Ugunsdzēsēji uguni lokalizēja 20 minūtēs, taču abu upuru nāves cēlonis bija saindēšanās ar degšanas produktiem.
Latvijā tiek izstrādāta veterināro zāļu e-izrakstu sistēma. Tās mērķis ir uzlabot dzīvnieku veselības datu pārvaldību un uzraudzību, kā arī atvieglot recepšu zāļu izsniegšanu. Sistēma būs pieejama veterinārārstiem, lopkopjiem un zāļu izsniegšanas vietām.
Vīrieši, kuri devās ledus zvejā uz Peipusa ezera Igaunijas pusē, apstājās uz ledus lāsmas, kas tos aiznesa Krievijas teritorijā. Viņi tika atrasti un atgriezti, bet notikums uzsver robežas pārkāpšanas riskus, pat ja tie notiek nejauši.
Ekonomika un bizness
Latvijas uzņēmums Carbon Less Future ir izstrādājis un ražo vertikālos koku audzēšanas konteinerus. Tie ļauj efektīvāk izmantot platību, kā arī kontrolēt augšanas apstākļus, un ir paredzēti, piemēram, dekoratīvo koku audzētavām.
Latvijas IT un patēriņa elektronikas izplatītājs Elko Grupa ir pabeidzis 60 % kapitāldaļu iegādi Somijas patēriņa elektronikas importētājā un vairumtirdzniecības izplatītājā Bat.Power.
