The press regularly refers to the "tiny Baltic states," usually in comparison to Russia, their 11 time zone spanning neighbor. Yet Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Taiwan are never called tiny even though all are smaller in area than any of the Baltic states—whose combined population outnumbers that of neighboring Denmark, Finland, and Norway.
